Introduction:

Microsoft created the business intelligence and data visualization application known as Power BI. It helps users generate interactive reports and dashboards, connect to numerous data sources, and convert and model data.

As a business analyst at prilient Information Technologies, I have been using Power BI Desktop's outstanding features to gain meaningful insights from our data.

Power BI (Business intelligence) is a group of software applications, tools, and connections that combine to transform various sources of data into coherent, engaging visuals, and interactive information. Excel spreadsheets and hybrid cloud-premises data warehouses are also examples of data. Power BI connects to data sources with ease, visualizes and finds the important information, then distributes it to anybody or everywhere.

Power BI Desktop Installation:

  • We must first download the desktop version of the software from the  Microsoft website before we can install Power BI Desktop.

  • To download Power BI for free, select the "Download Free" option.

  • Your computer will download the Power BI Desktop setup when you select the "Get" option.

  • Click "Install" once the Power BI Desktop has been downloaded.

  • The "Next" button must be selected in order to finish the installation.

  • We will be taken to Power BI's home page once the installation is complete.

  • Your name, the business you work for, your email address, your position title, and many other details will be requested. But close this window; these are irrelevant at this stage.

  • You will once again need to log into your Power BI Desktop account.

  • One requirement is that you can only use the official company email address. You are unable to use your email ID here.

  • The following window will now come up for us. In this window, we have to build our reports and dashboards.

How to import data into Power BI (Business Intelligence) Desktop?

  1. Import an Excel workbook: Import an Excel spreadsheet: To import an Excel workbook into Power BI Desktop, follow these steps:

  • Select an Excel workbook by clicking on Get Data.

  • Click on Connect, select file in the file manager, then select files and click on Load Data or Transform Data.

  • When file is loaded, it will show in the fields Choose your sub - fields of the file

Although there are currently no restrictions on the size or number of items in a workbook, larger workbooks take longer to analyze and import in Power BI Desktop.

Data Visualisation in Power BI:

Power BI( Business intelligence) Desktop is an effective tool for developing interactive data visualizations and reports. It helps you connect to multiple sources of data, transform and model your data, and build visually appealing visualizations to obtain insights from your data.

Features of data visualizations in Power BI:

Power BI Desktop provides a wide range of data visualization    features and capabilities, allowing you to generate intelligent and interactive reports to effectively examine and present your data.

  1. Connecting with data sources: Power BI Desktop can connect to many different kinds of data sources, including databases, Excel files, SharePoint lists, web services, and many more. You can either import data directly into Power BI or connect to your data source live.

  2. Data transformation and modeling: Power BI Desktop includes a comprehensive collection of tools for cleaning, shaping, and transforming data. Filtering, merging, separating columns, adding calculated columns, and building relationships between tables are all possible.

  3. Choosing the right visualizations: Power BI Desktop has a wide range of visualizations, such as bar charts, line charts, pie charts, maps, tables, matrices, scatter plots, and more. Depending on the nature of your data and the insights you wish to express, you can choose the right visualization.

  4. Configuring visual properties: After you've chosen a visualization, you can change its visual characteristics and functionality. Formatting choices in Power BI Desktop are complete, including changing colors, typefaces, axis scales, and adding titles and legends. Interactions between graphics can also be defined to generate interactive reports.

  5. Adding additional visuals and elements: You can add numerous graphics to a single report page in Power BI Desktop to create an extensive visualization of your data. Other elements such as photos, text boxes, shapes, and buttons can also be used to improve the narrative and user experience.

  6. Applying filters and slicers: Filters and slicers allow users to explore data interactively and focus on specific subsets of information. Filters are available in Power BI Desktop for individual visuals as well as global filters that apply to the full report.

  7. Creating calculated measures and columns: Using the DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) language, you can develop new computations depending on your data. This enables you to do complex calculations, create custom metrics, and include calculated columns or measures in your visualizations.

  8. Publishing and sharing: You can publish your data visualizations developed in Power BI Desktop to the Power BI service, where you can create dashboards, schedule data refreshes, communicate with others, share your reports with colleagues, or insert them in other applications.

Conclusion :

Power BI (Business intelligence) Desktop is a secure and flexible data visualization and analysis tool. It provides an extensive set of tools and capabilities for business analysts to connect to diverse data sources, transform and model data, and produce engaging visualizations and reports.

Through its interface with the Power BI service, Power BI Desktop additionally promotes collaboration and the sharing of insights. Analysts can publish reports, share dashboards, and schedule data refreshes, giving stakeholders real-time access to and interaction with visualizations.

Analysts may use Power BI Desktop to automate data integration, effectively prepare and transform data, and generate interactive visualizations that allow stakeholders to obtain insights and make data-driven choices. The advanced analytics capabilities of the application, such as the usage of the DAX (Data analysis expressions) language, help with complicated processes and more in-depth analysis.

Power BI Desktop enables business analysts to gain useful insights, improve decision-making processes, and accelerate business growth. Its user-friendly interface, broad visualization features, and powerful analytical skills make it a crucial tool for any organization trying to harness the potential of data.
